If carried out with an open mind, they are an irreplaceable factor of self-education, mutual tolerance and learning about the legitimate differences between peoples and cultures and their diversity.

We all have a role to play in generating responsible travel and tourism. Governments, businesses, and communities should certainly strive to do so, but you, too, as a visitor, can sensibly support this goal in many ways:

Open yourself to cultures and traditions other than your own: your experience will be transformed, you will gain the respect of the local people, and they will welcome you more easily. Be tolerant and respect diversity; observe the social and cultural traditions and practices of the place.

Respect human rights. Any form of exploitation violates the fundamental aims of tourism. Child sexual exploitation is a punishable offence, both where it takes place and in the country of residence of the perpetrator.

Help preserve the natural environment. Protect wildlife and its habitat, and do not buy products made from endangered plants or animals.

Respect cultural resources. Tourist activities must be carried out with respect for the artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage.

Your journey can contribute to economic and social development. Buy local crafts and products to support the local economy, and adhere to fair trade principles. When haggling, bear in mind the concept of a fair wage.

Before leaving for your trip, find out about the current health situation in your destination and access to consular and emergency services there, and ensure that your personal health and safety will not be endangered. Make sure that your specific needs (food, accessibility or medical care) are met there before deciding to travel to a particular destination.

Gather as much information as possible about your destiny, and take time to understand your customs, norms, and traditions. Avoid behaviors that may offend the local population.

Find out about the legislation in force to avoid committing any act that is considered a criminal offense in the country visited. Do not traffic in drugs, weapons, antiques, protected species, or dangerous products or substances that are prohibited by national regulations.

["GET
